Hillreed Homes Maidstone Closed Championships 2010

MWMC's Chris Knight and Larkfield's Hazel Clucas won the Mens and Ladies Singles titles at The Howard Table Tennis Centre in Rainham on Sunday 7th February.
Chris Knight, the number four seed, having won his group then put out Malcolm Skates (MWMC), his doubles partner 9-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-4. He then beat Denny Jose (Hillreed) in the quarters 11-5, 11-2, 11-5. In the semi-final Knight disposed of the number one seed Martin Hewett (MWMC) 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 and then went on to meet the number three seed Chris Marr (MWMC) in the final and after an epic struggle eventually won 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9.
Hazel Clucas (Larkfield) having knocked out the number one seed Jill Shipton (Hillreed) in the group then had a bye straight into the final were she beat Alison Pearson (MWMC) the number two seed 11-9, 9-11, 11-3, 11-5.
In the Ladies Doubles Alison Pearson (MWMC) and Jill Shipton (Hillreed) teamed up and had their revenge when they beat Hazel with partner Carly Hart (both Larkfield players) 10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.
The Mens Doubles also saw an upset to the seedings when the fourth seeds Peter Ives and Richard Farthing (Hillreed) having put out the number one seeds Martin Hewett and Graham French (MWMC) then went on to beat the number three seeds Kevin Dinnes and Craig Bartholomew (Civil Sports) in the final 6-11, 11-6, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7. Bartholomew and Dinnes reached the final by putting out Chris Knight and Malcolm Skates (MWMC), last years winners and the number two seeds, in the semi final.
The Mixed Doubles was once again won by Carly Hart (Larkfield) and Martin Hewett (MWMC) who beat Jill Shipton and Richard Farthing (Hillreed) after a mammoth tussle 6-11, 13-11, 11-3, 20-18.

The second day of the championships which was Junior and Veterans Day was held at the Howard Centre in Rainham on Saturday 13th February 2010.
The junior entry was very poor and made even worse when only two actually turned up to play. This does not bode well for the future of Table tennis.
However, Vet Graham French (MWMC) made the day his own as he won four events. He won the Over 50's, the Over 60's, the Mens doubles over 50 with partner Ted Tydeman (Civil Sports) and the mens doubles over 40 with partner Chris Marr (MWMC). The only other event he entered was the mens over 40's where he was only knocked out at semi final stage.
The Mens over 40's was won by Chris Marr (MWMC) who was the second seed. In the group stage he was actually beaten into second place by Graham French (MWMC) and so went through as runner up. He then beat Peter Ives, (Hillreed) the number one seed, 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8 in the quarter finals. In the semi finals, after a real struggle, Chris beat Dave McAulay (Hillreed) 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-4, 15-13 and then went on in the final to beat Craig Bartholomew, (Civil Sports) 11-8, 11-8, 11-9. Craig Bartholomew was responsible for ending Graham French's run in the other semi final 12-10, 11-7, 11-13, 13-11.
Una Salt (Trosley) won the Ladies over 40's beating Julie Hall (Larkfield) 11-5, 11-8, 15-13 in the final. Julie Hall (Larkfield) partnered with Barry Skates (MWMC) won the Mixed Doubles over 40 event, beating Julie Parker (Coxheath) and Paul Woollven (MWMC) 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 5-11, 11-9 in a very close final. The under 18's was an all Larkfield final with youngster Luke Savill beating his team mate Karl Rideout 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9.
